Why it matters

Why it matters

I was reminded this morning that before any of us makes any important decision, we should consult our “why?” Why are we doing what we are doing? Why did we choose this path? Why should we be entrusted with such important decisions?

…and why do our actions matter? Why do our decisions matter? For educational leaders, our decisions matter because the kids matter. We are entrusted with a huge responsibility and once we lose sight of that, it is no longer our why.  It can’t be. Something else has come along and replaced it. The honest school leader will walk away when and if his or her why changes. It happens all the time.

I dug really deep this morning evaluating my why. It was a reflective, honest, and undistracted self-evaluation. I was very happy with the outcome. My why has not changed. I still care passionately about these kids, our teachers, our community and I recognize that what I do, what I say, and how I act all matter.
